This hanging decoration, also called a mobile, is made of felt. It has a bright rainbow, two smiling clouds and raindrops hanging below them. The clouds' faces are embroidered. It measures about 34 x 26 x 7 cm and weighs about 160 g. Each one is made by hand in Nepal using traditional felt-making methods.
When the air moves
Because it is light, the raindrops stir and start to swing gently when a door opens or you air the room. You can hang it from a ceiling hook or a curtain rail.
The name mobile comes from this movement. It was first used in the early 1930s for Alexander Calder's moving sculptures.
The mobile sways most where there is a draught, for example near a window you often open. Choose a spot for the hook where nobody will bump their head on it, such as in front of a window or in a corner of the room.
For a child's room, out of reach
With its cheerful colours it is a good choice for a child's room. The maker states it is for decoration only and is not a toy, so hang it where a small child cannot reach it, and don't give it to a child to play with.
It is just as pleasant in a grown-up room, for example in front of a study window or in a corner of the bedroom. As a gift for a new baby, it works well if you leave it to the parents to decide where it goes.
Dusting
Felt collects dust over time. Now and then brush it with a soft brush or give it a gentle shake. Don't put it in water, as the felt can lose its shape. If the strings got tangled in transit, lay it flat before hanging and untangle them by hand.
