The process: recycled glass is melted over an open flame, then the hot, malleable glass is placed on a Gamal wood (Gliricidia sepium) root where it solidifies and permanently fuses with the wood.
The Gamal tree – also known as a fast-growing tropical tree used in Indonesia for centuries – has a differently shaped root every single time. This means no two identical candle holders exist. The object you receive is unique – in the curves of the wood root, the shape of the set glass, the intertwining of the two materials.
The materials and technique
The recycled glass comes from Balinese glassmakers' work – beer bottles, jam jars, window panes given a second life. The heated glass melts and recrystallises, so the finished object's surface is uneven, bubbly, alive – in no way resembling the original glass, yet strongly evoking volcanic lava stone.
The 10×17×5 cm size is compact but significant: the pattern of light and shadow generated by the glass when lit by a candle creates an exceptionally warm, organic atmosphere.
