This hummingbird hovers and leans down, as if drinking nectar. Its wings and beak are carved in fine detail. The bird stands above an untreated parasite wood base. It was made by hand in Indonesia, is about 18 cm tall, has a footprint of roughly 8 × 13 cm and weighs about 200 g. You receive one carving.
A bird that hangs in the air
A hummingbird beats its wings so fast that it can hold still in mid-air, and it can even fly backwards. That is how it drinks nectar from flowers, and this carving catches that very moment. Hummingbirds live only in the Americas.
A winding base, with the bird fitted to it
Below the bird, the base is parasite wood, from a plant that grows on a host tree and lives off it. It forms winding, irregular shapes, so every base has its own curve and grain. The carver fits the bird to it, which means your hummingbird will look a little different from the photos. Base colour varies too, and some pieces have darker patches.
Room for it on a narrow ledge
People say the hummingbird stands for joy and good spirits. Being tall and slim, it fits where space is short, on a windowsill, beside your books or at the corner of a desk. On a windowsill, with the light behind it, the line of the wings shows up well. It also makes a nice gift for someone who loves birds.
Keep the raw wood out of damp places and dust it with a soft brush. Radiators and strong sun dry the wood, so keep it away from them too. When you move it, hold it by the base, not by the thin beak or wings.
