A natural shell for smudging rituals
This is a medium 12–15 cm green abalone shell, shipped from the coast of Mexico. Despite its name, the outside is reddish-brown, while the inside shows a beautiful pearly sheen. We find that the gentle contrast between the outside and the inside is one of the loveliest qualities of this natural material.
How to use it for smudging
The shell is most often used to hold burning white sage bundles, palo santo pieces or similar fragrant smudges. During the ritual the lit plant or wood piece is placed in the bowl of the shell so it can smoulder. The natural holes in the shell allow air to flow, so the ember does not go out. Many users place a little sand or pebbles at the bottom so the heat does not reach the shell directly.
Every piece is unique
Because this is a natural product, the size varies between 12 and 15 cm, and the colour and surface differ slightly from shell to shell. Small patterns, edges or minor irregularities on the rim and surface are natural, not flaws. The stated weight (about 150 g) is indicative, and your shell may differ a little. Any algae remains can simply be brushed off under the tap with a soft brush.
Where it comes from and a sustainability note
The shell comes from Mexico, wrapped in paper for shipping. It is a real sea shell that forms naturally in the marine environment. If you would like a slightly larger piece, the L size is also worth a look. You can complement the shell with a cobra stand for nice display on your shelf, sold separately.
Storage tips for a long life
After use, allow the shell to cool down fully. If ash remains inside, gently shake it into a bin or onto a flower bed. Store the shell in a dry spot, away from direct sunlight, so the pearly inside keeps its beauty for as long as possible. From time to time you can wipe it with a soft, dry cloth to keep dust off.
