A larger natural shell for smudging rituals
This is a large 15–17 cm green abalone shell, shipped from the coast of Mexico. Despite its name, the outside is reddish-brown, while the inside shows a beautiful pearly sheen with green and pink shimmer. The larger size offers more room for the smudge material and is easier to hold during a ritual.
How to use it for smudging
This size suits white sage bundles, palo santo pieces and thicker smudge sticks well. During the ritual, the lit plant or wood piece is placed in the bowl of the shell to smoulder. The natural holes in the shell let air flow, so the ember does not go out easily. Many users place a little sand or pebbles at the bottom so the heat does not reach the shell directly.
A unique, natural piece
As this is a natural product, the size varies between 15 and 17 cm, and the colour and surface differ from shell to shell. Small patterns, edges and minor irregularities on the rim and surface are natural, not flaws. The stated weight (about 220 g) is indicative, and your shell may differ a little. Algae remains can simply be brushed off with a soft brush under the tap.
Where it comes from and what you can pair it with
The shell comes from Mexico, wrapped in paper for shipping. It is a real sea shell that forms naturally in the marine environment. You can place the shell on a cobra stand for a lovely display on your shelf, sold separately. If you would prefer a smaller shell, the M size is 12–15 cm.
Storage and care
After use, allow the shell to cool down fully. If ash remains inside, gently shake it out. Store the shell in a dry spot, away from direct sunlight, so the pearly inside keeps its beauty. From time to time you can wipe it with a soft, dry cloth to keep dust off. A beautifully placed abalone shell is a decoration in itself in a living room or meditation corner.
