The stone of garnet
Garnet is a hard group of silicate minerals formed deep within the earth under great heat and pressure; its best-known deep-red variety is almandine, with a Mohs hardness of around 6.5–7.5. Its glowing, full red looks distinctive and noble. In crystal lore it is known as a stone of vitality and courage, and tradition links it with willpower, optimism and hope.
The tumbled form
Tumbled stones gain their smooth, rounded surface through long polishing, which makes them sit pleasantly in the palm – a favourite as a pocket stone and meditation piece. This selection is mixed A/B quality: as a natural mineral, each piece can differ in shade, pattern and clarity, and every stone is unique. Pieces typically range between 0.5 and 2.5 cm.
Ways to use it
Garnet works beautifully as a pocket stone, on a desk or in a crystal corner, and makes a noble, richly coloured gift. Its glowing red brings a strong, spirited mood to a space.
Care and good to know
This is a durable mineral, yet it is worth protecting from knocks and abrasive surfaces and storing apart from other stones. Now and then you can rinse it under lukewarm water and pat it dry with a soft cloth.
