Who is Ganesha in the Indian tradition?

Ganesha is one of the most beloved figures of Indian mythology — the elephant-headed deity traditionally regarded as the remover of obstacles and the patron of beginnings. In many families he stands at the entrance, on a shelf or on a desk as a reminder that difficulties are not forever. Many of our customers choose him for housewarmings, the start of a new job or the launch of an important new venture.

Features of the finish

This medium tabletop size, approximately 14–16 cm tall is made with a copper and darker patina two-tone surface, which nicely highlights the details of the elephant head and the rounded body. The four arms and the traditional attributes — modaka sweet, axe, lotus — are finely worked. It is cast from solid copper in an Indian craft workshop and then hand-finished. Each piece is slightly unique, so what you receive is not exactly the same anywhere else.

Where does it fit at home?

According to tradition, Ganesha stands near the entrance at home — so it fits well on a shelf, a console table or on top of an entrance cabinet. But it looks just as good on a desk where its quiet presence is there during daily work. A wall with a neutral background or the middle of a bookcase highlights the lines especially well.

Material and care

The statue is made of solid copper, with hand casting and hand finishing. Copper may naturally develop a patina — many customers find this adds its own beauty. If you wish to keep the fresh shine, wipe it occasionally with a soft dry cloth. The use of chemical cleaners is not recommended. We do not suggest placing it in a humid room — a bathroom or a steamy kitchen.

Who can it be given to?

It pleases a family moving into a new flat, a friend starting a venture, a yoga teacher or an acquaintance who loves Indian culture. The kind expression of the Ganesha figure can be loved by those too who have not gone deep into the Hindu tradition. A short accompanying card in which you briefly introduce the meaning of the figure rounds the gift off.
