A transparent, light-bending clear quartz sphere, about 3 cm across, cut from polished rock crystal. Its glass-clear surface refracts and scatters the incoming light, making it a lively, sparkling focal point in a meditation corner, on a windowsill or in a feng shui arrangement. (Stand not included.)
Clear quartz, the rock crystal
Clear quartz, or rock crystal, is the colourless, transparent variety of quartz (SiO2). Its Mohs hardness is about 7, and it occurs across the world; clean, well-formed pieces are sought-after collector stones. Known as a 'master crystal', it is said in tradition to strengthen intention and clear a space, and is often described as an amplifier of other stones.
Why a sphere?
A spherical cut scatters light evenly in every direction and conjures small rainbows and refractions within the crystal. The round form evokes wholeness and continuity, and makes a favourite focal point in meditation.
Properties and size
The sphere is cut from polished natural rock crystal and measures about 3 cm across. As a genuine mineral, the internal inclusions, veils and tiny fissures vary from piece to piece – they make it unique and are not flaws.
How it is used
Many hold it as a focal point in meditation or set it in front of them; others simply display it where light can play across it. A stand or a small dish keeps it steady.
Care
A soft, barely damp cloth is enough to clean it. It is wise to keep it out of strong, focused sunlight, as the sphere can act like a lens and concentrate the light.
