A mallet built for large gongs
This 34 cm gong mallet has a generous felt head set on a sturdy wooden handle. The felt is soft enough to coax out the deepest, warmest frequencies of a large gong, and dense enough to give a sustained, hovering tone that fills the whole room.
How to use it
Hold the handle near its middle and let the mallet swing under its own weight as much as possible. Strike the gong away from the centre with a soft, controlled motion to bring up the lower harmonics. Small variations in angle, force and contact point change the colour of the sound — this is what makes gong play so expressive.
What soft felt offers
A felt head dampens the immediate attack and brings out the deeper, rolling overtones of a gong. Harder mallets are useful for clearer, brighter strikes, while felt and leather coverings give the soft, washy waves of sound that sound-bath audiences expect to feel as much as hear.
Long-lasting craftsmanship
The mallet is made in Nepal using traditional methods. With proper handling — storing it dry, out of strong sun and damp — it will keep its head shape and tonal quality for many years of practice. Many sound practitioners work with the same mallet for a decade or more.
