Endive lettuce is a real gardening ease: undemanding, easy to grow, equally good under cover and outdoors. Propagated by direct sowing, no transplanting needed. With its slightly bitter, piquant flavour, it's a popular base for mixed salads.
Growing
Sow February to June. Row spacing 30 cm, plant spacing 35 cm, sowing depth 2 cm. Tip: 1–2 weeks before harvest, tie up the head so the inside blanches lighter and milder.
Mixed salads, gourmet plates. Fresh tang for spring dishes.
