Meaning of the dorje and bell pair
The dorje, also called vajra, and the bell (drilbu) are key implements in Tibetan Buddhist practices, especially puja ceremonies. The dorje is a symbol of clear, strong understanding and masculine energy, while the bell symbolises wisdom and feminine energy. The combined use of the two reminds the practitioner that understanding and wisdom belong together for a correct view of reality.

The pair is made of brass in a notably fine finish, with detailed embossed decoration. The surface has a golden tone and the details are clearly defined. The 18 by 9.5 centimetre size is in the medium category, weighty enough for serious meditation practice while still easily handled. The total weight is 718 grams. The pieces are made in Nepal.
How the bell sounds
The bell has a clear, long ringing tone that serves meditation practice well, for focusing attention or closing a ceremony. Its tone is deeper and longer lasting than smaller bells. You do not need musical training to use it, just gently touch the striker to the rim.
How it is used in practice
In the Tibetan tradition, the dorje is held in the right hand and the bell in the left during ceremony. The bell is sounded at the beginning, middle and end of practice, symbolising the union of understanding and wisdom. If you have already studied under the guidance of a lama or Buddhist teacher, you will know the precise use. For beginners it is worth learning the movements in a teacher's presence.
Storage and care
The brass surface may develop a deeper traditional golden patina over time. If you wish to preserve the original shine, simply wipe occasionally with a soft dry cloth. We do not recommend strong cleaning agents, as they can damage the fine embossed details. The pieces are best stored in a soft cloth or a protective box.
