Cotton refill bag – filled with buckwheat hulls

Cotton refill bag with buckwheat hulls — for refilling meditation cushions, seat cushions or yoga bolsters. Natural, breathable, shape-keeping fill.

What is the buckwheat hull refill bag for?

If you have a meditation cushion, seat cushion or yoga bolster and over use the fill has flattened a little, this refill bag solves exactly that problem. Inside the cotton outer bag are buckwheat hulls (the outer husk of the buckwheat grain), a natural, breathable, shape-keeping and durable fill. You simply open the cushion's zip or opening, pour in the hulls and close it back up — the cushion is once again firm, comfortable and supportive.

Why buckwheat hulls specifically?

Buckwheat hulls have been one of the most popular fills for meditation and yoga cushions for many years. For several reasons: they do not collapse or crumble (as wheat chaff might), they do not soak up odours, and the small flat hulls gently follow the shape of the body during sitting without sinking. A well-filled buckwheat cushion holds its shape for years and gives an upright seated posture — unlike a foam cushion that softens over time.

How do you use the refill bag?

Your original cushion must open — usually via a zip or a tie cord. You open it, leave the old hulls inside (or remove some if there is too much), and pour in the fresh hulls from the bag. Pour slowly — shake the cushion at the same time so the hulls spread evenly. Fill until the cushion is again firm-elastic to the touch. Close the opening and you are done — it is ready to sit on again.

How do you store and care for the fill?

If you do not use the refill bag all at once, store it in a dry, cool place — in a cupboard, or in a textile bag on the shelf. Buckwheat hulls are long-lasting if kept dry; they should not take on moisture. If your cushion becomes damp (for example from sweat), air it in the sun. From time to time you can take out the hulls, spread them on a flat surface and place them in the sun for 1-2 hours — this freshens them and they become elastic again.

When should you replace it all?

Buckwheat hulls last for years, but if you feel the cushion no longer holds its shape — the seated posture becomes loose, the cushion flattens quickly — then it is time to add fresh hulls. Many people add a small portion of fresh fill once a year. One bag is enough for a long time for a medium meditation cushion, or two or three rounds for a large yoga bolster. It turns your old cushion into a home-mastered piece.
