Botany: Eugenia caryophyllata (leaf)
Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata, syn. Syzygium aromaticum) is an evergreen tree of the Myrtaceae family. The oil in this format is produced from the leaves of the plant, distinct from the oil extracted from the flower buds. The dominant aromatic compound of the leaf oil is eugenol, which provides a warm, spicy-balsamic scent. Due to the high eugenol ratio, the oil is intense and must be used at low doses.
Origin and production
The oil is sourced from Indonesia, a traditional clove-growing region. It is produced by steam distillation from fresh leaves. This method carries the volatile aromatic compounds with water vapour, keeping thermal load limited and preserving the distinctive eugenol-led profile.
Applications
- Private-label cosmetics: scenting body lotions and balms at strong dilution
- Aromatherapy: diffuser blends for autumn-winter spice compositions
- Soap making: cold-process soap with a spicy-balsamic scent profile
- Perfumery: spicy base note in oriental and gourmand compositions
- Home fragrance: potpourri and spicy room-scent bases
Storage and shelf life
Store the essential oil in a cool, dark place, preferably below 25 °C, in a tightly closed bottle. Protected from light and heat, clove oil typically keeps for 2-3 years. Unopened bottles retain quality longer; once opened, it is advisable to use the content within 12 months.
