A heart-shaped, palm-sized carnelian stone. The warm, orange-red surface is lively yet soothing to the touch; the little heart closes easily into the hand, at once an energetic splash of colour and a quiet object to hold.
Carnelian, fact and tradition
Carnelian is an orange-red chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz coloured by iron oxide; its hardness is around Mohs 7. It has long been a prized ornamental stone. In the crystal tradition it is regarded as a stone of drive and vitality, linked by many to the sacral chakra and creativity, all of which is tradition, not medical fact.
The tradition of smoothing stones
Smooth stones to run a thumb across have been turned in the hand as quiet companions for calm in many cultures. The repeating rhythm of the motion is soothing to many, while carnelian's warm colour radiates a lively, encouraging mood. This is folklore and tradition, not a medical claim.
Use and care
Hold the stone between thumb and index finger and turn it with a soft stroke. It is about 3 cm; as a natural mineral, its shape and shade are unique. Clean with a soft cloth.
For its heart shape and hold-in-the-hand size it also makes a much-loved, thoughtful gift, an intimate gesture that stays with the recipient for a long time.
