The brass singing bowl in Zenkoan finish
This 10.5 cm brass singing bowl in the Zenkoan finish, with a warm, golden-yellow surface. You hold a carefully shaped vessel with a smooth inner wall that produces a slowly unfolding, long-sustained base tone. Brass as an alloy resonates naturally: when you tap the rim softly or run a mallet around it, the sound gradually fills the room and lingers gently even after the rim has stopped moving. This slow fade is well suited to attention training and to following the rhythm of your breath.
How you can use it day to day
The bowl is helpful for a morning tune-in: after one or two soft strikes, simply listen to the resonance for a few minutes and follow your breath. For an evening wind-down, dim the main light, sit comfortably, and let each exhalation ride the slowly fading ring. At the end of a yoga or meditation session, a single soft strike marks the closing of the inward focus and helps you return to everyday attention.
Material and surface
The bowl is made of a brass alloy that resonates naturally. The surface is brass-colored and receives its final form through careful finishing. Brass develops a patina with use: a fingerprint or a slight discoloration may appear over time, which is not a flaw but the natural behavior of the material. If you prefer a brighter look in the long run, wipe the bowl occasionally with a soft, dry cloth and keep it away from damp places.
How to play it properly
The bowl sounds at its best when you do not rush the playing. Hold the mallet by its middle grip and start running it around the outer side of the rim slowly and at an even pace. During the first few circles you hear only a soft whisper, then the brass gradually settles in and the sustained base tone emerges. Moving the mallet too fast or pressing too hard turns the pleasant ring into a harsh scraping sound. A single soft tap on the side of the rim is also a fine starting move.
Storage and care
Place the bowl on a flat, level surface, ideally on a soft pad or cushion so that nothing dampens the resonance. Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight so that the surface retains its original tone as long as possible. For cleaning, a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth is enough; do not use harsh detergents. If the bowl is dropped or knocked against a hard surface, the rim can dent easily, so always pick it up with both hands.
