The noble giant among log drums
The Big Bom is not only large in its dimensions: its full, voluminous sound and its build quality make it one of Schlagwerk's most successful large instruments. It measures 120 x 40 x 42 cm, weighs approximately 30 kg, and its feet are made of natural felt so that it neither slips nor rattles on the floor.
Ten notes in F pentatonic tuning
The tuning consists of ten tones: F - G - A - c - d - f - g - a - c' - d'. That covers the full spectrum from a rich low bass to a bright alto, so genuine harmonic polyphony can be played on the instrument. Thanks to the pentatonic scale you can strike the tongues in any order and the harmony always holds.
Two players can sit on it
The Big Bom is an ideal instrument for communication: two players can sit on it and hold a creative musical dialogue with each other. This dialogue-based playing is valued in psychomotor development work and in group sessions.
Turned on its side: a sounding couch
The instrument can also be experienced lying on its side. In that position it works like a sounding couch, delivering intense vibration across the whole body. That is why the Big Bom is so sought after in therapeutic settings.
Materials, mallets, availability
Its soft, earthy voice comes from the combination of a solid maple soundboard and a solid alder body. The recommended mallet is the MA105. The Big Bom is available on request only.
