Benzoin Siam, a traditional incense resin
Benzoin Siam (Styrax tonkinensis) resin is obtained by carving the tree bark and collecting the dripping, hardened resin. In Asia, this resin has long been considered one of the most important incense ingredients. You receive an approximately 19 gram portion in its natural form, packaged for use.
What the scent is like
The scent of Benzoin Siam is sweet and warmly balsamic, often described as a calming, embracing presence in the room. Traditionally it is associated with awakening imagination and inspiration, fitting meditation as well as quiet shared time. Its element is water and its main influence is on the feelings.
How to use it on charcoal
Place a charcoal tablet in a heat-resistant dish, light it, and wait until a thin grey ash layer covers it. Then place a small piece of resin onto the charcoal. The scent appears within seconds and remains strong for several minutes. If you prefer a softer effect, dose only a very small piece at a time.
Gentler use on a sieve burner
On a sieve burner the resin burns more slowly, so the scent lasts longer and the smoke is gentler. You can freely combine it with sandalwood, eaglewood, myrrh, labdanum or Tonka beans to create your own blend. A larger sieve is more comfortable if you mix often.
Safety and storage
Always use a heat-resistant dish on a flat surface. Never leave the embers or charcoal unattended, and keep them away from children and pets. Store the remaining resin in a dry, cool place, in closed packaging, so its scent lasts a long time.
