Lavender and amethyst, two shades of purple in one box. Hand-rolled in India, the incense sticks come with a separate piece of amethyst.

The scent of lavender

Lavender smells floral and fresh, like a summer field in full bloom. Traditionally it is the scent of winding down in the evening. Many people light it after dinner, while reading or knitting, once the day's tasks are done. In winter, when the lavender in the garden has long finished, you can still have its scent indoors.

Greek for not drunk

Amethyst is the purple form of quartz. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning not drunk. The ancient Greeks believed that anyone drinking from an amethyst cup would not become drunk.

Today it is linked more with meditation and quiet, and people who work with crystals see it as a stone of spiritual depth. Many keep it on the bedside table. You could put it there too, next to your lavender sticks. Strong sunlight can fade amethyst over time, so a sunny windowsill is not the place for it.

The decorative box also makes a kind gift, especially for someone who loves lavender and already grows it in the garden.

Put it out before bed

Burn the stick in a heat-resistant holder on a stable surface, away from anything that can catch fire. Blow out the flame after lighting and stay in the room while it glows.

When you get ready for sleep, put it out first by pressing the glowing end into sand, then air the room. Keep the smoke away from children and pets, and store the box closed so the scent lasts.
