Banjara Crystal Incense Sticks – Copal with Obsidian

Copal-scented incense sticks hand-rolled in India, in a decorative box with a piece of obsidian, the glossy black volcanic glass.

This decorative box holds copal-scented incense sticks, hand-rolled in India. Packed separately beside them is a piece of obsidian. In the Banjara crystal incense line every scent comes with its own stone, and the earthy, resinous copal is paired with obsidian.

Volcanic glass in the box

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass. It forms when lava cools so quickly that it has no time to crystallise, which is why it is smooth and glossy, and usually black.

Tradition holds that obsidian protects, keeping bad influences away and helping you stay grounded. Many people keep it in the hallway, near the front door. You could also set it beside your incense holder, where it stays long after the sticks are gone.

The smoke of copal

Copal is the resin of certain tropical trees. In Mexico and Central America it has been burned in ceremonies since the days of the Maya and the Aztecs, and in Mexico it is still the scent of Day of the Dead altars. These sticks carry the scent of copal, rich and earthy with a slightly resinous note.

Traditionally it is lit for clearing a space and for ceremonies. If you are drawn to deep, resinous scents, this is the box to choose.

Blow out the flame after lighting

Place the stick in a heat-resistant incense holder on a stable surface, away from curtains and paper. Light the tip, blow out the flame after a few seconds and let it smoulder. Do not leave it unattended while it burns, and in a small room open a window slightly.

To put it out early, press the glowing end into sand or a heat-resistant dish. Keep children, pets and especially birds away from the smoke. Store the box closed in a dry place so the scent lasts longer.
