These small, 3 centimetre Ayurvedic sandalwood cones are designed specifically for backflow incense burners. The box holds 10 cones, made on an Indian Ayurvedic plant base. A tiny air channel runs through the cone from top to centre, allowing the smoke to flow downwards in a waterfall-like effect along the side of the burner. The sandalwood scent is soft, woody and slightly sweet, and in many homes it becomes the evening signature of calm.
What a backflow cone actually is
The smoke of a traditional incense cone rises upwards. Inside backflow cones, a vertical channel runs downwards. The warmed, dense smoke is heavier than the surrounding air and therefore flows down. On a backflow burner with a deep central well, the smoke cascades beautifully – which is why many of our customers order it, because it gives a quiet, captivating sight during dinner or an evening conversation.
Use only with a backflow burner
We have to highlight this clearly: the cone only works as intended in a backflow incense burner. On a regular incense holder the smoke would simply rise, and the characteristic effect of the cone would be lost. If you do not yet own a backflow burner, it is worth choosing one before purchase – we offer several styles in our range.
How to use it
Place the cone on a heat-resistant surface, light the tip and wait until it burns with a steady, even ember (this can take 1–2 minutes), then gently blow out the flame. Set the cone on top of the backflow burner so that the opening at its base aligns with the burner's opening. The smoke will begin to flow downwards shortly after. One cone burns for about 15 minutes.
The Ayurvedic tradition and sandalwood
Ayurveda is the ancient Indian science of living, built on the balance of the three energies known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The scent of sandalwood is traditionally regarded as calming and conducive to inner connection – which is why it has been used in meditation and prayer for centuries. In modern homes it works particularly well at the end of a long day, before reading, or after a difficult conversation.
Safety and storage
Set the cone on a heat-resistant base and never leave it burning unattended. Keep it away from children and pets. Store the opened box in a closed, dry place so the cones keep their scent. If a family member is asthmatic or has sensitive airways, ventilate the room regularly during use.
