Asafoetida — often called Devil's Dung — is an exceptionally pungent ritual incense of Asian origin. Its intensely spicy, earthy smoke has been a signature ingredient of protective smudging for centuries.
About asafoetida
Asafoetida comes from the resinous root of the Ferula genus, native to the regions of Afghanistan, Iran and Tibet. It was held in special regard in the Bön shamanic tradition and known as a classic incense of protection.
Tradition and atmosphere
Tradition holds that asafoetida smoke drives off heavy, unpleasant energies, making it a companion to space-clearing and protective rituals. Its scent is very strong, so it is usually used in tiny amounts and blended with softer herbs and resins.
How to use it
Place a very small crumb on glowing charcoal in a heatproof dish, or on a sieve burner. It is sharp on its own, so it is best softened with sandalwood, resins or flower petals.
Responsible use
Always burn it sparingly and in a well-ventilated space. As a natural plant-and-resin product, its texture, colour and piece size will vary.
