This medium-sized abalone shell also comes from the coastal waters of Vietnam, and each example is unique. The longest diameter of the shell is between 12 and 16 centimetres, and it weighs about 140 grams. The interior shimmers with an iridescent rainbow – blue, purple and green tones play across it depending on how the light falls. Together with the naturally rough outer surface, every piece brings a small story of nature into your home.
Why the medium size is a good fit
The 12–16 centimetre size is well suited to small and medium homes. The end of a sage bundle, a few palo santo chips or a spoonful of loose herb mix all fit comfortably inside, yet the shell does not crowd the table or the windowsill. It also travels easily: tucked into a soft cloth pouch, you can take it on holiday, to a country house or to a friend. Many of our customers choose this size as a gift.
Where the practice of the shell comes from
In Native American tradition, burning dried herbs to calm and clear a space is an ancient custom. Bundles of white sage, sweetgrass and palo santo sticks were often lit in an abalone shell, because the deep cavity safely holds the smouldering plant material, and the small holes on the side let air reach the ember. The four elements meet here: water in the shell, earth in the plant, fire in the ember, air in the rising smoke.
How to use it at home
Place a thin layer, about 1 centimetre, of dry sand or ash at the bottom. Light the tip of a sage bundle or a piece of palo santo, wait until it glows, and lay it inside the shell. You can guide the smoke with a feather, your hand or a flat fan towards the corners of the room, doors and windows. Many people use it after moving, or after a difficult conversation, so the air feels fresh again.
How to clean it
Wait until the shell is fully cool. Tip out the ash and wipe it with a dry, soft cloth. For a deeper clean, gently scrub with lukewarm water and a soft brush; avoid hot water and dish soap, as these can dull the inner iridescence. Dry it with a kitchen cloth. Traces of algae are normal and you can gently brush them off under running water.
Storage and a note of care
Keep it in a dry, cool place, ideally on a soft cloth or inside a cloth pouch. Do not set it on a wet surface, as that can leave a mark over time. If anyone in the household is sensitive to materials of marine origin, it is worth keeping that in mind before use.
