A living material in your hand
This shell is a real, natural Paua – also known as rainbow abalone – from New Zealand. The inner surface plays in shades of blue, green and violet, like a small sea reflected in calm water. The size is around 12.5 × 15.5 cm, which sits comfortably in an average hand. No two shells are alike – you receive a unique piece with its own pattern.
Why is it used as a smudge bowl?
The Maori – the original people of New Zealand – have long used similar shells as fine vessels. It is especially suited for burning loose white sage or palo santo pieces, because the natural breathing holes provide airflow. For you this means even, slow smouldering, with the ash kept inside the shell.
How to use it day to day
Place a small piece of loose white sage or palo santo into the shell, light it, then blow out the flame – let it smoulder only. Keep the shell on a heat-resistant surface, as the shell itself also becomes warm. You can use it for attuning your home, for moving house, or simply to softly scent the room. An old custom carried into modern living.
How to care for the shell
After use, once cooled, empty the ash. Clean the inside of the shell with a soft brush or sponge and lukewarm water. Do not use strong detergent. Any algae deposits can be gently brushed off under the tap. Do not put it in the dishwasher and do not soak it for long – this is a natural material that needs gentle care.
What to know before buying
Because this is a natural product, the size and colour will differ from piece to piece – this is the signature of nature, not a flaw. Small surface variations, minor marks or slight 'imperfections' around the edge are also normal. Sourced sustainably from New Zealand. You receive ONE shell – no separate stand is included.
