Botany: mandarin vs tangerine vs clementine
Citrus reticulata encompasses several mandarin-group variants: red mandarin (tangerine) is sweeter and deeper-toned; yellow mandarin is fresher and lighter; clementine is a mandarin-orange hybrid. The main components of the peel oil are D-limonene (85-95%), gamma-terpinene, myrcene and trace methyl-N-methyl anthranilate, which provides the characteristic tangerine aroma.
Origin and production
The oil is sourced from Brazil, from the citrus-growing regions around São Paulo. It is produced by cold pressing of the fresh fruit peel. The method applies no heat, so the delicate aromatic components remain intact — this is the standard process for citrus oils.
