Botany: clary sage (Salvia sclarea)
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is a Mediterranean-European biennial or short-lived perennial in the Lamiaceae family. Its essential oil is linalool- and linalyl acetate-dominant, producing a soft, floral, slightly nutty and balsamic aroma profile — one of the most common aromatherapy species. It is clearly distinct from the similarly named common sage (Salvia officinalis), which is thujone-, camphor- and 1,8-cineole-dominant and far more pungent and herbaceous. Origin and production
The oil is sourced from France, from traditional Provençal and southern European clary-sage growing regions where dry, sunny weather supports high oil yield. It is produced by steam distillation from the upper leaves (and flowering tops) of the plant.
