Botany: Melaleuca viridiflora
Niaouli (Melaleuca viridiflora) is an evergreen tree in the Myrtaceae family, a close relative of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and cajeput. Its essential oil typically has a high 1,8-cineole content, which gives a fresh, camphorous, respiratory-style aroma profile. This chemotype distinguishes it from other Melaleuca species.
Origin and production
The oil is sourced from Indonesia, from traditional niaouli-growing regions. It is produced by steam distillation from the fresh leaves and thin twigs. This method carries the volatile aromatic compounds with water vapour, keeping thermal load limited and preserving the characteristic camphorous aroma profile.
Applications
- Private-label cosmetics: scenting cleansing creams and serums for problem skin
- Aromatherapy: diffuser blends supporting respiratory comfort, inhalation blends
- Soap and candle making: cold-process soap, soy wax candles
- Massage oil: as a base for refreshing, sport-style blends
- Cleaning preparations: scenting natural surface cleaners
Storage and shelf life
Store the essential oil in a cool, dark place, preferably below 25 °C, in a tightly closed bottle. Protected from light and heat, Melaleuca viridiflora oil typically keeps for 2-3 years. Unopened bottles retain quality longer; once opened, it is advisable to use the content within 12 months.
