Botany: Mentha arvensis vs Mentha piperita
Mentha arvensis (Japanese mint, cornmint) is a high-menthol species whose oil often contains 70-80% menthol — significantly more than the typical 35-50% menthol of peppermint (Mentha × piperita). The two oils are not interchangeable: arvensis is more intense and cooling, less sweet, and is industrially a primary source of menthol. Accurate chemotype naming matters in formulation.
Origin and production
The oil is sourced from China, one of the major industrial cultivation regions for Mentha arvensis. It is produced by steam distillation from fresh or dried leaves. Water vapour carries the volatile aromatic compounds, so the high menthol ratio is preserved in the final product.
