Botany: Citrus limon and cold pressing
Lemon (Citrus limon) is a Mediterranean-subtropical fruit tree in the Rutaceae family. Its essential oil is produced from the small oil sacs in the fruit peel. The leading component is d-limonene (typically 60-70%), responsible for the fresh, characteristic citrus aroma profile. Cold-pressed lemon has a sharper, more natural aroma than steam-distilled lemon, which is milder but more stable. Citrus oils may be phototoxic due to bergapten content: avoid skin application before sun exposure.
Origin and production
The oil is sourced from Italy, from traditional citrus regions (typically Sicily and Calabria), where the climate supports fruit with high essential oil content. It is produced by cold pressing from the fresh peel of the fruit, using mechanical pressure without heat. This method preserves the fresh aroma profile and the natural colour.

Storage and shelf life
Citrus oils are particularly sensitive to light, oxygen and heat. Store the essential oil in a cool, dark place, preferably below 25 °C, in a tightly closed bottle — refrigeration can also be used to extend its life. Unopened, Citrus limon oil typically keeps for 1-2 years (shorter than steam-distilled oils). Once opened, it is advisable to use the content within 12 months.
