Botany: Cinnamomum zeylanicum (leaf)
True or Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum, syn. C. verum) is an evergreen tree of the Lauraceae family. The oil in this format is produced from the leaves and twigs of the plant, which differs from the more intense, cinnamaldehyde-rich bark oil: the main component of the leaf oil is eugenol, which gives a warm, spicy and softer scent character.
Origin and production
The oil is sourced from Sri Lanka, the original home of Ceylon cinnamon. It is produced by steam distillation from fresh leaves and twigs. This method carries the volatile aromatic compounds with water vapour, keeping thermal load limited and preserving the distinctive eugenol-based profile.
