Tikfák (percussions) – Sound Therapy and Meditation Instruments

The log drum (slit drum, tikfa) is one of the oldest percussion instruments in the world: different pitch and depth notes sound from slots cut in the top of a hollowed-out log when struck. The log drum was a ritual instrument of Melanesian, African, and Central American indigenous cultures, but is now widespread in modern percussive music, sound therapy, and meditation. Log drums range in size from small table pieces to large stand-mounted types. Smaller log drums (10-20 cm) are ideal for relaxation and table sound therapy; medium-sized ones (30-50 cm) for meditation group sessions; large stand-mounted log drums (60+ cm) for concerts and rituals. Natural wood (bamboo, teak, mahogany) log drums have unique, warm, and rich tonal quality.

Sound Therapy and Meditation: The Healing Power of Vibration

Sound therapy is a millennia-old healing tradition whose modern scientific foundations are also strengthening: sound vibrations directly affect cell membranes, the nervous system, and brainwaves. Vibrations generated by Tibetan bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, and other percussion instruments deeply relax the body, reduce stress hormone levels, and induce meditative states of consciousness. Sound therapy is particularly effective for relieving chronic stress, sleep disorders, anxiety, and physical pain. When selecting an instrument, the frequency range, material quality, and individual resonance are all important: the best instrument is the one with which you feel the deepest inner vibration. In our range you will find excellent quality sound therapy instruments.

Care and Maintenance of Instruments

Care for natural material and metal-based sound therapy instruments is minimal, but a few basic steps are indispensable for long service life. We keep metal instruments (gongs, bowls, tongue drums) away from damp environments and protect them from contact with salt water, which leads to corrosion. Occasionally treat the metal surface with natural white wax (beeswax) or leather care cream. Tibetan and quartz crystal bowls are wiped with a gentle, non-scratching cloth, and the striker sticks (Pythagorean rods) need to be occasionally replaced. Keep wooden instruments in a dry place and occasionally treat with natural oil (teak oil, linseed oil).

Types and Applications of Sound Therapy Instruments

Sound therapy instruments exist in many types, each with its own frequency range, material quality, and therapeutic application. Tibetan singing bowls (bronze, alloy-based) sound in the 200-900 Hz range and penetrate to the full depth of the body. Quartz crystal bowls (fused quartz-based) resonate at a purer, higher frequency and act more powerfully on the respiratory system. Gongs (bronze, brass, steel) create complex harmonics that fill the entire living space. Wooden percussion instruments (log drum, tongue drum) represent deep, natural, earth-close frequencies. The sound therapist generally combines multiple types in a single session for synergistic effect.

Where and How Are Sound Therapy Instruments Used?

Sound therapy instruments are most widely used in yoga studios, meditation centres, sanatoriums, natural healing clinics, and private meditation spaces. Group sound baths are possible for 5-30 people simultaneously, where participants listen lying down to sounds generated by the sound therapist. Individual sound therapy treatment is more targeted and personalised. As home meditation accessories, smaller-sized tingsha bells, crystal bowls, and tongue drums are all accessible and manageable. In our range you will find all listed sound therapy instruments for the most varied needs and purposes.
