Curated selenite bars, candleholders and spheres. The crown chakra stone, traditionally used to cleanse other gemstones.

What makes selenite special

Selenite is the translucent, fibrous variety of gypsum (calcium sulfate, CaSO4·2H2O), with a white-silver glow that recalls moonlight — hence its name, from the Greek moon goddess Selene. It rates only 2 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it softer than most collector stones: it can even be scratched with a fingernail. For you, selenite offers an atmosphere of clarity, lightness and gentle radiance: polished bars and spheres almost seem to glow from within.

The main sources are Morocco, the United States (Oklahoma), Mexico and Brazil. Moroccan selenite is the classic translucent, fibrous form used for slim candleholders and polished bars.

Energy and tradition around selenite

Crystal therapists and the gemstone tradition call selenite the stone of cleansing — many traditions use it to refresh and clear other stones energetically. Placing a bracelet or small stone next to a selenite bar for a few hours is, by tradition, a way to refresh it. These are tradition-based notes, not medical claims.

Tradition associates selenite with meditation and stillness, especially in the evening before bed. Many people place a larger bar or candleholder in the bedroom.

Selenite and the crown chakra

Chakra tradition links selenite to the seventh, crown chakra (Sahasrara), and often to the eighth, transpersonal chakra above the head in the symbolic system. These chakras are traditionally associated with higher awareness and the experience of light. If you do not follow the chakra system, selenite still works as a beautiful, light-reflecting piece of décor — on a windowsill or beside a candle it almost glows.

Where it may be of support

According to tradition, selenite is most often present in the areas of clarity, light and meditation. Crystal practitioners traditionally hold that many people choose it for the following life areas:

According to tradition, selenite pairs particularly well with other stones because it is itself traditionally regarded as the cleansing stone:

Where to place it in the home

According to tradition, selenite has several possible places in the home, BUT due to humidity sensitivity, a dry location is essential:

How you can use selenite day to day

Polished selenite bars are excellent for cleansing other stones: lay a bracelet or smaller stone next to the bar overnight. At home, place it in the bedroom, meditation corner or windowsill. The candleholder form is wonderful in the evening with warm light: the flame filters through selenite's fibres.

As a bracelet or pendant, selenite is rarer because its softness wears with daily use. If you do wear it, handle it gently and remove it before bathing.

Care and cleansing of selenite

IMPORTANT: NEVER clean selenite with water. It dissolves in water, and over time the polished surface becomes dull or breaks into pieces. Use a soft, dry cloth instead. Tradition says selenite cleanses itself and needs no separate energetic clearing — though you may pass it through moonlight monthly. Do NOT use ultrasonic cleaners either.

Humidity: avoid bathrooms and other damp rooms — high humidity can damage it over time.

Gift ideas with selenite

Selenite makes a beautiful gift for someone who meditates, a friend moving into a new home or a yoga studio owner. An elegant polished bar, a candleholder or a slender sphere is a quiet, light-bringing gift — especially in winter, when natural daylight is scarce.
