Shell Types and Their Qualities
The most commonly used shell materials each offer a distinctive visual quality. Capiz shells – from the windowpane oyster of the tropical Pacific – are extraordinarily thin and translucent, allowing light to pass through them almost completely for a soft, diffused, pearlescent glow. Mother of pearl shell – the inner lining of many molluscs – has a distinctive iridescent quality that reflects different colours at different angles, producing a shimmer that moves as the viewer moves. Whole sea shells and spiral shells can be assembled into mosaic lamp bodies where the light passes through the gaps between the shells, creating a pointillist pattern of warm light dots. Coconut shell, carved with openwork patterns, shares the organic quality of true shells while offering a different texture and tonal character.
