Djembe and Shaman Drums – The Living Pulse of World Percussion
The djembe and the shaman drum are two of the most powerful and widely beloved percussion instruments in the world – each with deep roots in ancient cultural traditions, each producing a sound that connects directly to something primal and universal in human experience. The djembe's complex, three-voiced tonal range and the commanding physical presence of frame drum shamanic practice together represent the full scope of what hand percussion can be: technical, expressive, therapeutic, ceremonial, and purely joyful. At Természetkosár, our djembe and shaman drum collection brings together quality instruments from traditional makers for the full range of players, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.
The Djembe
The djembe is a goblet-shaped drum from West Africa, traditionally carved from a single piece of wood and headed with animal skin – traditionally goat skin – stretched over the drum's open top and tensioned with a complex rope system. The instrument produces three fundamental tones: the bass (produced by striking the centre of the head with a relaxed, flat hand), the tone (produced by striking the edge of the head with the finger joints), and the slap (a sharp, cutting sound produced by striking the edge of the head with a cupped hand that snaps flat on impact). These three voices, in their many dynamic variations and combinations, allow the djembe to function as a complete percussive voice in ensemble settings. The djembe is the primary instrument of the West African jeli tradition, used to support ceremony, storytelling, and dance.
Shaman Drums
Frame drums used in shamanic practice exist across an extraordinarily wide range of cultures – Siberian, Mongolian, Native American, Sami, Tibetan, Celtic, and many more. The shamanic drum is typically a shallow frame drum with a single animal skin head, held in one hand and struck with a beater in the other. The drum's role in shamanic practice is as a vehicle – its rhythmic beat carries the practitioner and participants into altered states of consciousness that allow access to non-ordinary reality for healing, divination, and spiritual work. The specific drumbeat most commonly used in shamanic journeying is approximately 200–220 beats per minute, a frequency that research has associated with shifts in brainwave patterns toward theta and alpha states.
Therapeutic and Healing Applications
Both the djembe and the shaman drum have well-established therapeutic applications beyond their musical and ceremonial uses. Drum circles and group rhythm work have been shown to reduce stress hormones, improve immune function, and create social bonding through synchronised rhythmic activity. Individual shamanic drumming practice supports deep relaxation, visualisation, and access to creative and intuitive mental states. Drumming therapy is used in clinical contexts for working with trauma, addiction, and emotional regulation.
