Carrier Oils – The Foundation of Natural Skin Care

Carrier oils are indispensable raw materials for natural cosmetic production and aromatherapy. The primary purpose of these cold-pressed, unrefined plant oils is to dilute essential oils and allow their safe application to the skin — essential oils in pure form are too concentrated and can irritate the skin. However, a carrier oil is not merely a "carrier": it is itself rich in skin-caring active ingredients, fatty acids, vitamin E, phytosterols, and other biologically active compounds.

Different carrier oils have different compositions and different skin care effects. Almond oil is universal, light, and excellently absorbable; jojoba oil has a composition similar to human sebum and perfectly regulates sebum production; argan oil is a premium antioxidant and anti-ageing oil; coconut oil is deeply moisturising and antibacterial; rosehip seed oil is regenerative and fades scarring and spots.

The Most Important Carrier Oils and Their Effects

Almond oil (Prunus amygdalus) is one of the most versatile carrier oils: rich in oleic and linoleic acid, light in texture, nearly odourless, and suitable for all skin types. Especially recommended for dry, sensitive, and itchy skin. Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is technically not an oil but a liquid wax — making it exceptionally stable and long-lasting. It regulates sebum production and is ideal for oily and combination skin.

Argan oil (Argania spinosa) is a premium oil from Morocco, rich in vitamin E and oleic acid, which has proven particularly outstanding in facial and hair care. Rosehip seed oil (Rosa canina), with its high linolenic acid content, is one of the most effective regenerating and brightening oils — recommended for scarring, pigmentation, and prematurely ageing skin. Hemp seed oil (Cannabis sativa) has an ideal ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and is particularly effective for inflammatory skin conditions, eczema, and psoriasis.

How to Choose a Carrier Oil?

When selecting a carrier oil, skin type, intended application, and fragrance are the most important considerations. For dry, sensitive skin, avocado oil, shea oil, or coconut oil is nourishing; for oily, acne-prone skin, jojoba, hemp seed, or grapeseed oil is recommended; for mature, wrinkled skin, argan oil, rosehip seed oil, or sea buckthorn oil are the best choices. For oils applied to the face, checking the comedogenicity (pore-blocking effect) is especially important.

As an Ingredient for Home Cosmetics

Carrier oils are the basic elements of home cosmetic production: body oils, facial serums, massage oils, lip care products, and sugar and salt scrubs are all built on carrier oils. A simple DIY body oil recipe: 100 ml almond oil + 10 drops lavender essential oil + 5 drops bergamot essential oil = natural, scented body oil. This simple recipe shows how easily and inexpensively natural body care can be achieved at home.

Storage and Shelf Life

Carrier oils should be kept in a cool, dark place, sealed airtight. Light and heat cause oxidation, reducing oil quality. Most carrier oils keep for 1-2 years, but vitamin E-rich oils oxidise more quickly. Adding a drop of vitamin E can extend shelf life. When purchasing, choose the cold-pressed and unrefined version, and store in glass bottles rather than plastic to prevent chemical migration.
