Materials and their character
Mango wood is a traditional handicraft material in north-western India (especially Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh). It has a yellowish, sometimes slightly rose-shaded tone, dense grain, workable and lasting. A hand-carved mango-wood frame is a lasting investment — it retains its character for decades, and the wood acquires a finer patina over time. How do you choose the right frame?
The first question is: what kind of picture, photo or object do you want to place inside? A classic black-and-white family photo in the carved mango-wood frame gives a special atmosphere. A modern colour wedding photo in the gemstone-inset plastic frame receives a more luxurious emphasis. An empty mirror itself becomes a decoration in a carved wood frame.
The second question is the place. The 3D frame "takes possession" not only of the picture surface on the wall but also of a few centimetres of space around the frame — so another picture placed too close visually crowds the wall. Leave at least thirty to forty centimetres of free space around the 3D frame.
Craftsmanship and care
Wipe the mango-wood frame gently with a dry soft cloth when dusting. Once or twice a year it is worth rubbing it gently with food-grade oil (coconut, almond, linseed) — this keeps the wood's healthy glow and protects against drying out. Direct sunlight and high humidity are not recommended. The plastic frame can also be cleaned with a slightly damp, mild-detergent cloth; avoid aggressive chemical cleaners that may scratch the surface.
