Autumn Skincare Routine on a Natural Basis

When the seasons change, it’s always wise to adjust your skincare routine as well. With products optimized for cooler and more humid weather, your skin can remain radiant throughout autumn.

Why is the autumn skincare routine different?

Autumn doesn’t only affect our mood, it changes the condition of our skin and hair, too. Cool winds, fluctuating temperatures, and the dry air of heated rooms all contribute to dryness and irritation. Hair also suffers: hats can cause friction, while cold winds make strands more fragile. This is the time to switch from light summer textures to richer, more protective and nourishing products. Ideally, these should contain natural ingredients that restore balance to skin and hair without putting an additional burden on nature’s resources.

Body care in autumn: replenishing the barrier layer

The most important task in autumn is to strengthen the skin’s protective barrier. This barrier layer acts like a shield: it locks in moisture and protects against environmental stressors. To nourish it, natural fats and oils are especially beneficial, particularly those rich in saturated fatty acids. Shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil are excellent options, but jojoba, almond, and olive oil also deserve attention. These don’t simply coat the skin with an artificial layer, they feed the upper layer while stimulating the skin to rebuild its own protection, making true regeneration possible.

Autumn face care with a DIY lip balm recipe

After the summer months, gentle exfoliants can be reintroduced once a week, always in the evening, due to their photosensitizing effects. Overuse can easily damage the skin, so moderation is key. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, stimulates cell turnover, and helps the complexion look fresher, smoother, and more even.

Physical scrubs can also be used occasionally (again, no more than once a week), preferably made from natural ingredients, and applied after cleansing. A simple DIY scrub can be created from a little oil mixed with ground almond shells, olive pits, grape seeds, or even whole poppy seeds. Avoid sugar or coarse salt, as their sharp edges can cause micro-tears, leaving skin more vulnerable.

Alongside rich body creams, facial moisturizers should also be fuller and richer in lipids, chosen according to skin type. For oily skin, avoid comedogenic cocoa butter, but lightweight oils like jojoba, rosehip, or borage oil are ideal additions to creams. Depending on the skin’s needs, other nourishing ingredients can also be replenished.

Don’t forget lip care: with windy weather, lips become extremely sensitive. Leaving lip balm at home just once can mean cracked corners by the next day. Chapped lips love shea butter, which can be enriched with walnut oil and essential oils such as true lavender or palmarosa. When preparing a homemade balm, include about 1% beeswax in the melted mixture (over gentle steam), this ensures better absorption and longer-lasting protection. Important tip: shea butter is heat-sensitive, so add it after turning off the heat, letting it melt gently from the residual warmth of the other fats. Once ready, pour the mixture into lip balm containers.

Hair care: the role of oils and masks

The key to autumn hair care is nourishing both the strands and the scalp. Applying hair oil to damp ends helps preserve shine, protects against split ends, and keeps hair supple. In addition to oils, a nourishing hair mask once a month can prevent dandruff and irritation.

Many notice that hair becomes oilier under hats. In such cases, solid shampoos can be an excellent alternative. They cleanse gently without synthetic foaming agents and help restore the scalp’s natural pH balance.

Hand care: natural creams for every situation

Hands are among the most exposed parts of the body. Daily use, combined with cold, windy weather, causes rapid dryness. During autumn and winter, hand cream becomes indispensable. The best choice is a cream that truly nourishes: rich in herbs, cold-pressed oils, and butters. In contrast, products containing petroleum derivatives or silicones often only create a superficial layer without helping regeneration. That’s why you may feel the skin on your hands tightening repeatedly throughout the day when using such products. With a good natural hand cream, applying it once or twice daily is enough.

Why choose natural cosmetics as part of the autumn skincare routine?

The advantage of natural cosmetics is that they deliver active ingredients that genuinely benefit the skin and hair, even in small amounts. They do not overload the body with unnecessary chemicals, do not create long-term dependency, and are also more environmentally friendly. Petroleum derivatives and artificial fragrances often only appear to care for the skin, without improving its actual condition. Natural formulas, on the other hand, enhance elasticity, help retain moisture, and offer a healthier long-term solution for both people and the planet.
